Trade Information Ironworkers perform widely varied tasks with constructing, maintaining and changing the built environment wherever people live and labour. Their efforts range from the assembly of massive red-steel girders, beams and rebar concrete reinforcement on large infrastructural projects, such as buildings, bridges, petro chemical plants, mine sites etc. to the custom fabrication of fine, wrought-iron architectural ornamentation. Ironworkers also play an important role in installing curtain wall components of high rise buildings which give modern cityscapes much of their distinctive luster. Given this versatility, Ironworkers are vital to many facets of the construction industry – itself a mainstay of Manitoba’s economy. They occupy an honoured place among the building trades and contribute to the durability, soundness, safety, and beauty of built structures. Sometimes the very nature of their work, however may tend to disguise its importance and scope, for ironworkers contributions are essential to the skeletal strength and stability of those projects they undertake. The Ironworker trade offers relatively steady employment but is subject to seasonality and to business cycles. Another factor that must be considered is the mobility aspect of the trade; a vehicle is almost a must for people working in the trade.
